Automotive Recruitment

For many years, the UK automotive industry was the backbone of British engineering. While today, foreign-owned manufacturers have replaced many of our indigenous OEMs, there are still something like 800,000 jobs dependent on the industry, which collectively generate around £51 billion of income for the UK economy.

The large OEMs depend on specialist skills within their partners in the automotive supply chain, which in turn influences the demand for people skills right across the sector. In recent years, the skill sets that employers look for have shifted with the technology deployed in vehicles. For example, it’s not unusual for a modern car to contain more than 50 microprocessors, which has driven demand for embedded software specialists in the industry alongside the traditional automotive disciplines like powertrain, mechanical tooling and body in white (BIW) engineering.

Whatever the job, automotive companies look for people who know the industry. We recognise that – if a client asks for someone with experience, we’ll aim to put forward candidates who have worked in the automotive industry.

Key skills for automotive:

  • Design engineering
  • Mechanical tooling
  • Electronic design
  • Embedded software development
  • Powertrain development
  • BIW engineering
  • Quality assurance: inspection; systems; supplier, problem solving

Spirent

Spirent Communications advances the next generation of communications systems, from design and development, to the delivery of network devices and solutions.

"Austin Fraser have been employed primarily to supply Spirent Communications with contract and permanent engineering design staff for hardware, software and test.  I have found Austin Fraser a pleasure to deal with and we have, over a short period of time, built up a strong working relationship."

Otodynamics

Otodynamics specialises in otoacoustic emissions instruments and is acknowledged as the pioneer and leader in this field.

As a specialist medical devices company, Otodynamics wanted to work with a recruitment consultancy that had a proven track record in its market sector.

“Austin Fraser was very well tuned to our needs. They put forward five candidates for a specialist quality assurance position. The three people we interviewed were able to meet the majority of our requirements so we were delighted to have had an embarrassment of riches from which to select and appoint our new team member.”

Airbus

Airbus leads the world in the design and manufacture of commercial aircraft. The Airbus approach is to ensure that aircraft share the highest possible degree of commonality, which reduces the operating costs for airlines.

Airbus wanted to attract highly talented and experienced engineering professionals driven by a pioneering spirit and a passion for aeronautics.

“The team at Austin Fraser is extremely customer focused. They took a lot of time upfront to understand our business and the requirements of the technical positions that we recruit for. The result is that they can put forward a couple of candidates for a job and we know that they will be a very good fit.

Austin Fraser’s service takes the recruitment burden away from our management team. We simply don’t have time to trawl through hundreds of CVs, which in our experience is what a lot of other recruitment agencies give you. Another thing that we like about their approach is that they are completely honest with us. If we are asking for the impossible, they will tell us rather than promise something that they cannot deliver, which means we can plan accordingly.”
