For many years, the UK automotive industry was the backbone of British engineering. While today, foreign-owned manufacturers have replaced many of our indigenous OEMs, there are still something like 800,000 jobs dependent on the industry, which collectively generate around £51 billion of income for the UK economy.
The large OEMs depend on specialist skills within their partners in the automotive supply chain, which in turn influences the demand for people skills right across the sector. In recent years, the skill sets that employers look for have shifted with the technology deployed in vehicles. For example, it’s not unusual for a modern car to contain more than 50 microprocessors, which has driven demand for embedded software specialists in the industry alongside the traditional automotive disciplines like powertrain, mechanical tooling and body in white (BIW) engineering.
